Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Douala airport and led to the hotel.
Day 2: Douala – Edea – Pongo Songo- Kribi
Early departure (7:30 am) from Douala to Edea, with brief stops on the way to watch some specialties like Hartlaubs ducks, Persuses cliff swallows, African skimmers, Grey Pranticole and many others. Stop-over at Edea for breakfast in a local restaurant offering mostly African food. Continue watching different specialties as you drive along the Sanaga River to Dizangue which is home to large oil palm plantations owed by Swiss nationals; and where the 7 lakes Ossa Wetland is located; may have the opportunity to watch the sea lions in this wetland. The next stop is Pongo Songo where you find the Mariemberg German Church (the first Catholic Church in Cameroon) built in 1890 by the Pallotin Fathers. Ride in a boat to the small island and visit the chimpanzee sanctuary. Other attractions in this locality include an attractive lake and forest. Return to Edea and continue to Kribi for overnight in a hotel after lunch in an ocean side restaurant or in the house of a local inhabitant.
Day 3: Kribi – Ebodje- Campo
Early breakfast and departure to Ebodje, situated some 50 km from Kribi, where you may have the opportunity to watch sea turtles at their laying sites (mostly from December to January) and birds at the sea and in the forest near this village. Also visit the marine museum, owned by the community tourism organization, where specimens of a variety of sea turtles are displayed. Watch a folklore and dance performance by the indigenous population (Bagyeli pygmies) before departing to Campo for overnight.
Day 4: Campo Ma’an National Park for birdwatching with the rock fowl (Picartharthes) being the outstanding specialty.
Day 5: Campo – Dipikar Island by boat. Set up campsite before engaging in gorilla tracking and birdwatching.
Day 6: Dipikar Island-Kribi
Early rise to continue gorilla tracking, and return later in the day to Campo and continue to Kribi for overnight.
Day 7: Kribi-Douala
Stop-over at Edea for lunch at same spot. Sight-seeing around Douala and some neighbouring localities before overnight.
Day 8: Douala – Limbe
Main attractions on the way are rubber and palm estates. While at Limbe visit the Bimbia Slave Route and see remnants of the slave trade, the first missionary house built by American missionaries and the following specialties: Western Blue Bill, giant kingfisher, long- tailed cormorant, Carmelite sunbird, palm nut vulture, violet-tailed sun bird, speckle mouse bird, grey crowned nigro finch, black necked weaver, common-wattle eye, western reaf egret, grey heron, great blue turaco, white thigh hornbill, yellow casquet hornbill. Visit the Botanic Garden, one of the most outstanding in the West and Central African sub regions, and Wildlife Centre, both in the heart of the town and immerse with the diverse plant and wildlife species in captivity, including chimpanzees, gorillas, baboons, crocodiles, snakes. Overnight in a hotel after supper at a seaside restaurant.
Day 9: Limbe –Buea
Birdwatching at the fringes of Cameroon Mountain; visit some colonial edifices and a museum before overnight in a hotel.
Day 10: Buea – Nyassosso
Nyassosso is a village setting located about 150km from Buea. Brief birdwatching at the fringes of Bakossi mountain before overnight at the Women’s Centre.
Day 11: Nyassoso – Bangem
Continue birdwatching further into the mountain forest and depart later in the day to Bangem for overnight.
Day 12: Bangem Birding at Kupe-Muanenguba twin lakes, visit indigenous mountain-residing fulanis and may practice horse riding and return to hotel for overnight or may camp by the lake.
Day 13: Bangem – Melong- Douala Breakfast at the eco-lodge (Villa Luceole) at Melong; stop over at Ekom-Nkam Waterfall for the final stage of birding; continue to Douala for a rest before departure at midnight.
